Grimm.
Creatures of shadow and death upon the world.
Humanity has fought against such creatures since they first walked this earth and have only recently begun to push them back. Abditus is one of those rare locations with protections and defensible positions that let people live ‘comfortable’ lives in the wilderness.
Grimm are creatures without souls, and as such, do not posses Aura. While they do not seem inherently attracted to all things with Aura, those with stronger control of theirs - the likes of Humans and Faunus - are the primary targets of Grimm. Though they do not appear to need to eat to survive, the congregate around areas of great sorrow and loss for humanity like savannah animals drawn to a watering hole. Perhaps most noteworthy about this is that the creatures will eat their targets, so some speculate if it is this careless killing and destruction that drives them.
Grimm come in a number of different shapes and sizes, though they share a couple primary traits. The first is that they are primarily black and white, with black shadows composing their flesh and white bony material covering their bodies like armor or sticking out like spines. Miscellaneous other features of a Grimm may be highlighted in reds and yellows. Their size varies widely, from small floating ghost like creatures to massive winged birds of prey. It seems this difference in size is partially to do with age; as a Grimm grows older and more experienced, it grows larger. Below are brief descriptions of some of the types of Grimm you may encounter in this world.
Beowolf: Black Grimm appearing similar to werewolves. Their bodies have white spikes protruding from them, and the hard material lines their claws and teeth, making their attacks particularly deadly. As they age, they grow in size and add white plates to their structure for a stronger hide.
Birengel: A more intelligent breed of Grimm and about the size of a small cart or wagon, Birengel have tough black hides peppered with small white plates. Extremely durable, it takes more than a couple simple strikes to take one out.
Boarbatusk: Boarbatusk look like common wild boars, though are substantially larger - usually around the height of an adult at the shoulder. They are known to travel in packs and with their dangerous horns, are capable of quickly overwhelming a Huntsman.
Creep: A creep looks slightly like the front end of a crocodile, with a gaping maw filled with sharp teeth and incredible bite force. Though they are not the most agile of Grimm, having two legs, they can charge at a frightening speed.
Death Stalker: Death Stalkers resemble the scorpions found in the deserts to the West. Their claws are capable of slashing and crushing, while their golden stinger can pierce through solid rock. They are also some of the most armored Grimm, being covered with a white bony exoskeleton.
Geist: A small grimm with a moderately humanoid appearance, Geist are capable of inhabiting inanimate objects. While inhabiting such an object, Geist can become great golems and regenerate their bodies with the surrounding elements.
Goliath: Looking like giant elephants, Goliaths are often multiple stories tall. An ancient line of Grimm, Goliaths are often studied due to their “moderately docile” nature. Due to their age, it is implied they are highly powerful, though no tales exist on what power they may hold.
Griffon: Quadrupedal Grimm with insatiable hungers, Griffons fly in swarms to attack human settlements. Their beaks are capable of piercing or crushing through most that stand in their way, and the mighty claws at their feet make them worse to deal with up close than most would expect from a flying Grimm.
Taijitu: Taijitu appear as conjoined snakes with one black head and one white head. Fast on the ground with even faster strikes with their venomous fangs make the Taijitu especially deadly.
Nevermore: Flying, bird like Grimm, Nevermore are seen as some of those Grimm whose size varies wildly. Some could be mistaken for a slightly oversized raven while others are large enough to blot out the view of the sun. While flying, a Nevermore can let loose a volley of feathers from its wings to impale its prey from afar.
Sea Dragon: Long serpentine Grimm with collapsible wings, Sea Dragons spell bad news for most ships. A constant threat in the ocean, Sea Dragons attack with speed and power, letting loose bolts of electricity from their mouths and cutting gales of wind from their wings.
Ursa: Great bear like Grimm, Ursa are some of the most common sort of Grimm one will encounter - next to Beowolves. Incredibly strong strikes with their claws make punching through steel easy work for such a Grimm, and it’s often a good idea to just avoid the swings of the lumbering beasts for that reason alone.
You will note that some Grimm names are in Italic text. These are some of the harder to find or stronger varieties, and as such will only be controlled by staff or members given special permission to run them. All others are fair game.
