Legends, stories scattered through time.
Mankind has grown quite fond of recounting the exploits of heroes and villains, forgetting so easily that we are remnants, byproducts, of a forgotten past.
Man, born from dust, was strong, wise, and resourceful, but he was born into an unforgiving world. An inevitable darkness, creatures of destruction. The creatures of Grimm set their sights on man and all of his creations. These forces clashed and it seemed the darkness was intent on returning man’s brief existence to the void.
However, even the smallest spark of hope is enough to ignite change and in time, man’s passion, resourcefulness and ingenuity led them to the tools that would help even the odds.
This power was appropriately named, “Dust”.
Nature’s wrath in hand, man lit their way through the darkness and in the shadow’s absence, came strength, civilization, and most importantly, life.

This is where our story – your story – comes in. Dust Wars takes place in the long-forgotten past of Remnant, where Man was first emerging from hiding. When academies were just starting to be an idea, and when legends lived and walked among man.
In this world, there are no Kingdoms, no academies, roaming tribes of Man and Faunus, and rampant Grimm. In your explorations, you may come across the Oasis that will come to house Vacuo, or cross the icy wilderness of Mantle, visit the cliffs of Mystral, or plumb the depths of the forests surrounding Vale. As for Academies, well, this hole in the wall of humanity you call home has something like that. After all, it is a good way to organize and train young warriors for the tough times ahead.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to describe this place the ragtag conglomerate of humanity calls home. The place is not large – in total the main settlement and its sisters hold ten thousand souls, more or less. Located in the Southeast reaches of the continent of Sanus, the small collection is known as Abditus. The area is ideal for a small settlement, ringed on three sides by mountains with the fourth exposed to the coastline. The interior of this ring is small wooded valley, with a small lake in the center. For the most part, small groups guard the Abditus border, though with no formal fortifications, the occasional Grimm do make their way down from the mountains.
And what of this pre-academy? Abditus doesn’t often use the term, but “Abditus Academy” seems to be the thing sticking around at this point in time. It’s informal at worst, and almost strictly a combat school at its best. The world does not know a whole lot about Grimm, and so most classes are very hands-on in nature. Grades only sort of exist, and informally, you have 4 basic age groups. Usually after someone comes of age at the ripe young age of 16-17 years old, they train a bit in how to fight at the school. “Stay longer, become a better fighter” seems to be the mantra. Like a wizened old crow said, “one week out there is worth a month in here.” Well, when you’re here, you are out there.
Some people don’t really go to the school, and that’s fine. Abditus is a fledgling society, both in terms of entertainment and technology. We’ve got a few luxuries here – small Scrolls, though robotics still needs a bit of work. Dust powered airships are just becoming a thing, and look more like sailboats in the sky than anything else. Perhaps they will be doing some prospecting in Mystral or Mantle in the future. If you lose an arm, you’re likely stuck with a primitive prosthetic with little ability to move the device. Entertainment and arts are just beginning to blossom in the society as some members can live in relative safety. Flamboyant outfits and over-the-top personalities abound, and the people have come to adapt.
Not much is known of the world outside of Abditus; the mountains have proven too treacherous to cross, and the seas nearby are deep – home to more than just “big fish stories.” Amongst all of this wilderness and unknown, we have one little aspect some forget: Faunus. The Faunus are found around the area, but mostly travel in ‘packs,’ and though they and humanity talk, stereotypes exist even more strongly today than ever before as they seek to find safe places to settle. A rare child or two might make their way to Abditus Academy, though their integration never goes over quite well with the locals.
And as for those rampant Grimm, who says that there’s only one Dragon around?
